Biography of Charles E. Packer
Charles E. Packer of Mystic River, Connecticut, was the son of George Washington Packer and Eliza Lamb, and was born in 1832. He was married to Laura Halsey Lamb (of New York) in 1862, and had three children, Halsey, Charles and Adelaide.
During the years covered by this collection, Packer was master of the bark FALCON (1863-1864), bark GALVESTON (1867-1868), and the ship ANNIE M. SMULL (1869-1882). Both GALVESTON and ANNIE M. SMULL were built and owned by the Mallory Company. The former vessel was designed for the New York/Galveston/Liverpool tramp circuit, and the latter operated in the New York/San Francisco/Shanghi/Liverpool trade. The bark FALCON was built at Newburyport in 1851 and hailed from Point Elizabeth, South Africa in 1864. She was evidently a British registered vessel at that time.
Charles E. Packer last appears on the 1910 census at 78 years of age.
