Records of T.H. Franklin

Manuscripts Collection 187

Overview of the Collection

Repository: G. W. Blunt White Library, Mystic Seaport
Creator: T.H. Franklin (Firm)
Title: Records of T.H. Franklin
Dates: 1894-1960
Extent: ca. 3015
Abstract: The collection primarily consists of the broker’s vessel listings (14 boxes); with tugs and towboats, tankers, barges, side and sternwheel steamers, yachts, sail boats, steamships, fishing boats, and many other vessels, all represented. These listings are organized by vessel type and listing number. Following these, there are 9 boxes of scrapbook material, with photographs and clippings for vessels of all kinds, in addition to other items of marine news. These scrapbook pages have been separated from their volumes, but the original order has been maintained in file folders. Box 24 contains bulletins, circulars, and correspondence describing vessels being offered for sale. These were primarily things received by T.H. Franklin from other brokers. Franklin also handled engines, boilers, pumps, generators, and dredges, as well as other pieces of marine equipment. Box 25 contains papers regarding his business with the machinery. This collection contains very little general business correspondence or papers, but what there is can be found in Box 26, along with some other items of singular interest. There are 13 small notebooks (Box 28) identified as “Order Books”, covering the years 1904-1926 (with volumes for 1907 and 1921 missing), which could provide solid information about Franklin’s business. There are also 2 volumes, described as a “Sale Book” and a “Journal”, 1926-1933, in Box 29, along with 10 other volumes of marginal research value.
Identification: Coll. 187

History of the Firm T.H. Franklin

Thomas H. Franklin was a shipbroker of New York. His listings, which comprise a major part of this collection, reveal that he handled all types of vessels, from barges and tugboats to large steamships. He also listed foreign flag vessels, as well as marine equipment and machinery. Although his letterheads indicate that the firm was established in 1857, it probably began under a different name. T.H. Franklin was a partner in the brokerage of Rackett & Co. in 1894, but by the turn of the century the business carried his name only, and was located at 80 Broad Street. In 1930 it moved to 8-10 Bridge Street and Thomas H. Franklin, Jr. seemed to have been managing the operation. Internal evidence indicates that Stephen J. Horkay probably represented the firm during the 1950’s-1960’s.
