Abstract: Sea journals, diary, account book, obituaries, and related papers. Includes journal describing Pacific whaling voyages (1855-1862), out of New Bedford, Mass., by ship ALICE MANDELL and barks CLEONE, MARTHA, and SALAMANDRE; diary detailing voyage of the CLEONE, chiefly an indictment against the master and first mate; and ships accounts (1868-1871) of the brig CAMILLE, engaged in West Indian trade. Persons represented include Strout’s wife, Jane F. Strout.

Biography of Robert Bruce Strout, 1833-1881

In early life Robert Bruce Strout of Wakefield, Rhode Island went on whaling voyages to the Pacific Ocean on the ship ALICE MANDELL, Bark SALAMANDRE, Bark CLEONE as second mate and Bark MARTHA from 1855 to 1862. From 1865 to 1866 he was master of the Brig JOHN PIERCE and from 1866 to 1871 he was master of the Brig CAMILLE engaged in the West Indies trade. He wrote a lecture on his whaling experiences and delivered it on a tour of New York State. At the time of his death he was a policeman in Peace Dale, Rhode Island. He was survived by his wife, Jane F. Strout, three daughters and one son.
