World Cruise Diary of S.S. FRANCONIA
Although the keeper of this diary is not precisely identified, internal evidence indicates that it was quite possibly written by Miss Adeline E. Brown. Employed by Thos. Cook & Son (the New York-based agents managing this cruise) as the staff nurse, Brown provides detailed descriptions of visits to popular historic sites, shopping and sightseeing, and images of the cultures she encountered during her trip. Activities aboard ship are somewhat less defined, but she does identify her favorite traveling companions and gives the reader a view of various programs offered for the passenger’s entertainment. In addition, related papers in this collection suggests that Adeline Brown was aboard the S.S. TUSCANIA for a Mediterranean cruise the previous year, and may have been employed by Thos. Cook & Son on other trips. Her diary however, does not mention any official duties she conducted as a nurse.
