History of the United States Sailing Association
The USSA was founded in 1897 as the NAYRU (North American Yacht Racing Union). Organized as a multi-national authority and sponsor for the sport of yacht racing the Union continued to grow. After a brief lapse of activity during World War II the Union changed its name to the Untied States Sailing Yacht Racing Union. Increasing international involvement, especially with the Canadian Yachting Association, required the final name change in 1991 to the United States Sailing Association.
