History of the Cruising Club of America (CCA)

The Cruising Club of America was launched in the fall of 1921 by a group of yachtsmen and enthusiasts dedicated to cruising and the development of the cruising yacht. Similar to the Royal Cruising Club in Great Britain it was the first club of its kind in the United States. In addition to the national organization there are currently several regional member “Stations” covering New England and the Northeast, the mid-Atlantic, Florida, and the West Coast. Since 1924 the CCA has co-sponsored the semi-annual Bermuda Race, with sailing yachts from all over the world competing for numerous prizes in several sailing categories. The club publishes an annual, in addition to a newsletter, called the CCA News.

Scope and Content

The CCA has been successful in preserving a remarkable amount of its historical material, much of which can be found in series such as the Historian’s files, Early records, Parkinson papers, and the William W. Nutting papers.

Log books for yacht races and cruises are also present, with the largest number being found in Yacht Logs. Most are filed by yacht name.

There are several individuals whose names appear with greater frequency than most others, indicating that they may have donated their records to the Archives at an earlier date. They include among others, John Parkinson, Jr., Charles H. Vilas, William W. Nutting, Peter Comstock, William White, Richard S. Nye, James McCurdy, and Arthur B. Homer.

Researchers are reminded that these records consist primarily of the club’s papers, documents, clippings, and such. All related memorabilia, objects, photographs and snapshots have been removed to other departments at Mystic Seaport for cataloging and preservation.

The records in this collection are generally considered to be in good condition and may be comfortably used for research. However, some of the early correspondence and documents are acidic and quite fragile. While some items have been photocopied there are many others that must be handled with care.

The largest of these groups is the Bermuda Race files, comprising 92 document boxes of race records, correspondence and other information. While every race is not equally represented it remains a major research source for anyone interested in the Bermuda Race. Another large group of records entitled Measurement Rules details the Club’s involvement with the more technical aspects of yacht design and competitive cruising.

These records are organized chronologically. Beginning with the 1964 Race, researchers will find individual files for each boat entered in that years race. Typical records in these “Entries” files include entry forms and information, race instructions, inspection or survey data, crew lists, and correspondence. Entry files are not present for every Bermuda Race and the information they contain may vary from one year’s race to another. Note also that the dates indicated on the box descriptions are generally specific to the year of that particular race, and not to the dates of each piece within those files, i.e. the 1974 Race records will probably contain pieces created in 1973, etc. Currently there are very few records on file for Bermuda Races held in 1978, 1980, 1982, 1986, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000, and 2002.
