Manuscripts Collection 188

Overview of the Records

Repository: G. W. Blunt White Library, Mystic Seaport
Creator: Mystic Shipyard
Title: Records of the Mystic Shipyard
Dates: ca. 1924-1971
Extent: ca. 25,000 items
Abstract: The Records of the Mystic Shipyard contains over 25,000 pieces of manuscripts filed in 66 document boxes, plus 31 volumes of business records.
Abstract: The Collection is divided into two major subgroups. The records of the Sea Sled Corporation, ca. 1924-1932, make up Series A. Here one will find incoming and outgoing business correspondence, memos, telegrams, petty cash accounts, employee accounts, and product information about the Sea Sled designs being built by the shipyard at that time. Series A is filed in 10 documents boxes, numbered A1 through A10.
Abstract: Series B contains the records of Mystic Shipyard Inc., which succeeded the Sea Sled Corporation in the early 1930’s and which represents nearly 80% of the entire Collection. Included is correspondence with owners of boats built or sold by Mystic Shipyard ca. 1931-1939 (boxes 1-7); general business papers ca. 1942-1948 (boxes 8-41); materials relative to yachts STOUT FELLA Jr. & Sr., CRITERION, and WALLABY, ca. 1945-1949 (boxes 46-48); and papers regarding contract work for the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard during W. W. II (boxes 49-54) The 31 volumes are sales records, accounts payable and receivable, cash book, minute books, and various other records for the Company from 1936-1971. Most of the papers in Series B are concentrated between the years 1932-1948, with the volumes providing a summary record of the shipyard’s activities from 1940 through August 1971, when the Company went into liquidation.
Abstract: Overall the Collection is arranged chronologically, and in some instances by subject. Provenance has been maintained wherever practical, and it is suggested that the researcher familiarize himself with the Box and Folder Description section below.
Identification: Coll. 188
