|Title:||Capt. John W. Carter Papers|
|Abstract:||This collection contains 5 volumes and a photograph of Capt. John Carter. Three volumes are Carters’ journals for voyages in the Bark RAMBLER, while the two remaining volumes are account books containing crew accounts (Bark RAMBLER), and Carter’s vessel accounts with the owners of Ship ADALINE and RAMBLER. Journal entries are generally brief, with emphasis on weather and navigational information. The account books are more detailed. Crew members are identified and Carter’s vessel accounts are very complete.|
John Carter was a shipmaster from Manchester, Massachusetts. During the period covered by this collection he was master of the Ship ADALINE (1874-1875), and the Bark RAMBLER (1878-1880). The RAMBLER was owned/managed by Smith & Townsend of Boston. During this time the vessel carried various cargos to and from Boston, San Francisco, New York, Batavia, and Iloilo in the Philippines.
