Biography of Mason R. Packer

Mason R. Packer (1800-1888) lived most of his life in Mystic, CT and was involved in a variety of maritime and business activities. As a young man he fished for southern markets and kept store in Key West, Florida. He later returned to Mystic, and was involved in sealing, whaling, coastal trade and other local businesses.

He was evidently a player in Mystic’s major business activities of the period. The revival of sealing and whaling was a boost to the local economy and Mystic men were also in the salvage and store-keeping operations that centered around Key West. Packer’s papers make several references to the sale of elephant oil and he was part owner in four of Mystic’s whaling vessels (GLOBE, LEANDER, TAMPICO, and VERMONT).
