Biography of the Averill Family

The Averill Family Papers contains correspondence among members of the Averill family of Rockland, Maine, discussing family matters and day to day details of the late 19th century coast trade. Primarily containing brief letters to Margaret Averill from her husband Frank B. (b. 1844) the collection also includes letters to Margaret from Frank’s brother Cyrus B. (b. 1834), and son Albert, as well as other family members.

Frank commanded several schooners from 1864-1889 including the UNION, LUCY AMES, and BENTON, carrying lime from Rockport and returning with available cargoes such as coal, and salt from New York, Baltimore, Providence and Boston.

Margaret stayed home in Rockland, raising the children, and attending to domestic matters which are rarely mentioned in correspondence. Letters, 1897-1898 deal mostly with their son Albert, his education, marriage and bout with scarlet fever.
