Biography of Samuel A. Beebe, Jr.

Samuel A. Beebe, Jr., of East Lyme, Connecticut, engaged in the Atlantic coast trade and fished off of the coast of southern New England during the later half of the nineteenth century. He and his brothers Charles W. (c. 1845-?), John A. (c. 1851-?), and George (c. 1855-?) assisted their father, ship owner and captain Samuel A. Beebe, Sr., during their formative years. Beebe, Jr., engaged in the coastal trade and Atlantic fisheries, and later became master of the Schooner CORDELIA (1872-1873). In 1866, he married Almeda Letterfield (1848-1876) of Block Island, R.I., and they had one daughter, Claire Louisa Beebe (b. 1872).

The 35 journals in Beebe’s collection detail his daily activities during fishing trips and trading voyages, as well as his life onshore at home and in ports. Beebe recorded the numbers and types of fish caught, the types of cargo carried in trade, his personal feelings about being absent from home, and various sites that he visited in the coastal cities. He also mentioned the presence of black men in the maritime economy and reported about Confederate naval activities during the Civil War.
