Biography of Albert E. Condon
Albert E. Condon (1887-1963) of Thomaston, Maine, studied naval architecture at the Franklin Union in Boston, Massachusetts and was also an accomplished boatbuilder. He began his career by working his way through school as an apprentice boatbuilder for his uncle Rufus G. Condon. After graduating, he joined the firm of C. A. Morse of Thomaston, Maine, as a boatbuilder. He went on to work for George Lawley & Son Corp., Neponset, Massachusetts, as a boatbuilder before joining the Portsmouth Navy Yard, Kittery, Maine as a designer. Mr. Condon worked as both a designer and boatbuilder for Gray Boat Company, Thomaston, Maine; I. L. Snow Shipyard, Rockland, Maine; and Pierce & Kilburn, Fairhaven, Massachusetts, where he designed many of his large fishing vessels. He was one of the first to design and build wooden fishing boats to American Bureau of Shipping A-1 standards. Mr. Condon retired in 1950 and returned to Thomaston, Maine where he continued to design at home until his death in 1963.
